At Growing Wings we are all about giving tamariki the tools they need to explore, create, and learn in their own unique ways. One of the ways we offer our tamariki these opportunities is through our child-led philosophy where loose parts are provided for tamariki to explore through their play.
Loose parts are a great way to promote creativity, imagination, and social interaction, while also supporting children’s physical and cognitive development. Loose parts encourage tamariki to think outside the box, take risks, and try new things. They learn to collaborate with others, negotiate conflicts, and communicate their ideas in a variety of ways.
One of the best things about loose parts play, is it doesn’t require fancy toys or expensive equipment – in fact, some of the best loose parts are things you can find in your own backyard, the beach or the forest. Through using natural materials like sticks, stones, and leaves, we can help tamariki connect deeper with Papatūānuku and develop a sense of wonder and curiosity, all while learning to appreciate the beauty and diversity nature offers.
So whether you’re a parent or a kaiako, why not give loose parts a try? You might be surprised at the amazing things that can happen when you let the kids take the lead and explore their own creativity and imagination.
